Mercedita Airport located 6 km east of the central business district of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Mercedita is Puerto Rico's largest airport in terms of military personnel volume and the second largest in terms of military freight. Built in 1939, Mercedita Airport gets its name from Hacienda Mercedita, the sugar plantation where it was located. Its airport code comes from the city of PoncE, with the ‘S’ as a phonetic substitute for the ‘C’.
